About Greece

Where Mythology Meets the Azure Sea

Greece is the birthplace of democracy, philosophy and the Olympic Games — and yet what draws most travellers is simpler and more profound: the quality of the light. That specific luminosity that makes every whitewashed Cycladic wall glow, that turns the Aegean a shade of blue that photography struggles to capture, that bathes the Acropolis at sunset in a gold that makes 2,500 years feel like yesterday.

Sixth Gear designs Greece itineraries built around your definition of the perfect Greek experience. A private sailing charter between Mykonos and Delos. Breakfast on a Santorini caldera terrace. A private access dawn visit to the Acropolis museum. Or a deeply local week on a lesser-known island like Naxos, Folegandros or Hydra — where tourism hasn't yet smoothed off the edges.

The Acropolis & Parthenon

The defining symbol of Western civilisation — the Parthenon crowns Athens from a sacred rock visible across the entire city. Visit at opening time for golden light and relative solitude, then explore the outstanding Acropolis Museum below.

Santorini & the Caldera

Santorini & the Caldera

The world's most photographed sunset is in Oia. The entire island is the rim of a submerged volcanic crater, giving Santorini a drama unlike anywhere else in Greece. Stay in a cave hotel for the full caldera experience.

Meteora Monasteries
Thessaly
Meteora Monasteries

Monasteries perched impossibly on top of vertical sandstone pillars rising from the Thessaly plain. Best seen at dawn in the mist — one of Greece's most otherworldly and spiritually powerful landscapes.

Sacred Island of Delos

The mythological birthplace of Apollo — an uninhabited island reachable only by boat from Mykonos, covered in extraordinarily well-preserved ancient ruins including lion terraces and mosaic floors.

Palace of Knossos

Iconic whitewashed windmills, a glamorous waterfront and labyrinthine alleys full of boutiques and tavernas. Mykonos delivers both cosmopolitan nightlife and deeply atmospheric Cycladic architecture.

Local Cuisine

What to Eat in Greece

Moussaka

Greece's great baked dish — layers of aubergine, spiced lamb mince and bechamel, baked until golden. Every Greek family has their own version. The taverna version in a village square is incomparable.

Souvlaki

Greece's beloved street food — marinated pork or chicken on a skewer, served wrapped in warm pita with tzatziki, tomato and red onion. Best eaten standing at a souvlatzidiko at midnight.

Spanakopita

Flaky filo pastry filled with spinach, feta, eggs and dill — eaten at any time of day across Greece. The street-food versions from bakeries, still warm, are exceptional.

Grilled Octopus

Hung to dry in the sun, then chargrilled and drizzled with olive oil and lemon — this is the quintessential Greek island appetiser, best eaten at a harbourside taverna with a glass of ouzo.

Loukoumades

Greece's answer to a doughnut — golden, honey-soaked fried dough balls sprinkled with cinnamon. An ancient Greek festival food still sold from street stalls today.

Horiatiki Salad

The original Greek salad — tomatoes, cucumber, Kalamata olives, green pepper and a slab of barrel-aged feta, dressed with nothing but excellent olive oil and dried oregano.

When to Visit

Greece by Season

Spring

Wild flowers on Crete, quieter islands, the Acropolis without the summer crush. April and May offer perfect temperatures for island-hopping and mainland sightseeing.

Summer

Peak island season — Santorini, Mykonos and Corfu are gloriously alive. Book six months in advance. Mainland Greece can be very hot but the islands catch the Meltemi winds.

Autumn

Arguably the best time — warm sea temperatures well into October, falling prices and the islands returning to local life. September is perhaps the ideal single month to visit.

Winter

Athens is mild and walkable with few tourists. The islands largely shut down. A winter trip combines well with a city break in Athens focused on museums and food.
